Plato Reading Online Kingston Groups

Plato study group onlineThe Kingston Plato reading group meet Tuesday mornings 9.30-10.30am on zoom reading Plato’s Phaedo from 10th February 2026.

The New Translation of Plato’s Dialogues

We use the text translated by Dr David Horan and published in 2025, which is freely available on the web at https://www.platonicfoundation.org/ . It is in straightforward modern English. We recommend you read his guide to Reading Plato – a guide for beginners – Platonic Foundation before commencing your studies.

Group Meetings

This group meets on zoom for 10 or 11-week terms. We read the text aloud to comprehend it’s meaning before discussing its implications and relevance to life today. We are not carrying out a comparative academic study, but we love to engage with the brilliant mind and wisdom of Plato and his teacher, Socrates. These great works are inspiring and the spirit is indeed uplifted; and no prior knowledge of Plato is required to participate.

Plato has a way of speaking directly to the soul rather than to this present earthly mortal existence and the dialogues show the reader more about how to think than what to think and questions are asked that many may never have considered before. In our study we try to follow the example of Socrates by not thinking we know what we do not actually know.

New Members Are Welcome

These study sessions are free to students enrolled on our Practical Philosophy Course in any of our branches and those who are not enrolled are currently asked for a nominal £50 per term of 10 sessions. (£5/session).(We are a charity – please email if you need a concession)

How it works on our educational courses

A tutor presents material, and leads a discussion based on what arises. Being practical rather than academic, the emphasis is on personal knowledge. Students are encouraged neither to accept nor reject the ideas put forward, but to test them in practice for themselves, in the light of their own experience.

The present moment

“This course ‘woke me up’, particularly to the present moment. Learning to use the ‘full stop’ between daily events and pausing, rather than everything running in to one continuum”

Very practical

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this course. It has been very practical and has given me lots of tools and exercises to use in my daily life. Coming back each week and feeding back to the group has reinforced what I have learned and given me extra pointers”.
