Kingston Branch Study & Activity Mornings

Kingston Branch Study & Activity Mornings

These Saturday mornings provide an opportunity for all our students to come together once a term and enjoy each other’s company. We meet, study and work together in a constructive way usually including a philosophical practice or theme.  It is a practical session and is not only intended to be of service to our students but to all concerned, including our hosts, through simply meeting the needs of whoever or whatever is in front of us. It could take any format as appropriate to the students and to the time and place; it may include a short period of study but it will mainly involve working together for a period of practical attentive activity including the practice of present awareness; being here now. Many find the study comes to life when engaged in a practical way; this is why we call it Practical Philosophy. These mornings are much enjoyed and are a significant part of the course for all our students.

Students who have studied with us at any time in the past, who might like an opportunity to reconnect and join us even if only for one morning, are also very welcome. Just email [email protected] if you are interested and we can send you details of our next event.

The programme for the morning varies but we will always endeavour to find fresh ways of energising and inspiring the practical work of philosophy for our students and all are welcome.

How it works on our courses

A tutor presents material, and leads a discussion based on what arises. Being practical rather than academic, the emphasis is on personal knowledge. Students are encouraged neither to accept nor reject the ideas put forward, but to test them in practice for themselves, in the light of their own experience.

The present moment

“This course ‘woke me up’, particularly to the present moment. Learning to use the ‘full stop’ between daily events and pausing, rather than everything running in to one continuum”

Very practical

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this course. It has been very practical and has given me lots of tools and exercises to use in my daily life. Coming back each week and feeding back to the group has reinforced what I have learned and given me extra pointers”.
